Machine Plane

Each Computle workstation runs on its own physical blade: a type 1 hypervisor hosting one virtual machine, with the CPU, GPU, memory and NVMe storage of that blade dedicated to the one workstation. Nothing is shared between customers, and nothing is shared between workstations, so one user’s workload cannot slow another’s.

Computle blade workstation v1

  • GPU. Passed straight through to the workstation. Graphics performance is the same as on a physical PC with that card.
  • CPU. All cores of the blade belong to the workstation.
  • Memory. No contention with other workstations.
  • NVMe storage. Local to the blade.

The hypervisor keeps a small part of the blade for itself:

  • Memory: 2 to 4 GB. A blade with 64 GB gives the workstation around 60 GB.
  • CPU: around 0.1% for managing the virtual machine.
  • Graphics: none. The GPU is passed through directly.

Workstations are stored as QCOW2 disk images. The Imaging page of the Computle Portal lets a Tenant Admin:

  • Capture an image from an existing workstation, to roll the same build out to a team.
  • Keep an image library, hosted by Computle free of charge. Computle can also host Windows Deployment Services where you need it.
  • Deploy an image to a workstation. The workstation is shut down and its disk replaced with the image; it is ready in minutes.

See Machine Portal.

Computle provides a default image that can be deployed to any workstation and then customised with your own applications. People install their own plugins and in-house tools; Computle does not lock the workstation down.

Component
Windows 11 Professional
Computle (Remotle) host, for remote access
Computle agent
QEMU guest agent
NVIDIA drivers for the workstation’s GPU

The Computle agent and the QEMU guest agent run inside the workstation. They report the workstation’s health, hardware readings and power draw to the Computle Portal, and let the hypervisor shut the workstation down cleanly and recover it if it stops responding. The portal’s provisioning view shows the driver version and agent version of each workstation.
