Our Approach to Engineering

Other companies resell someone else’s kit. Computle designs its own hardware and passes the savings on.

Computle V1 Blade Workstation

Computle V1 blade workstation

A typical VDI provider buys off-the-shelf servers or workstations, packs several virtual machines onto each one and places them in a data centre.

That works for some use cases. As the service scales, or the applications become more demanding, users run into limits:

  • CPU, GPU and disk contention between the virtual machines on one server.
  • A cost per seat well above that of an ordinary workstation.
  • Poor use of data-centre space, which makes adding capacity expensive.

Computle took a different approach from the start.

Computle engineered its own hardware around dedicated, single-user workstations. We are now on revision four, and Computle runs on blade workstations, each with:

  • a dedicated CPU;
  • a dedicated GPU;
  • dedicated NVMe storage and RAM.

Each seat has the whole blade to itself, so there is no contention with other users.

Each Computle blade costs around half the price of equivalent off-the-shelf hardware, which is how we keep the subscription price down.
